Firefox Extensions – SessionSaver

September 5th, 2006 · No Comments · Internet

I use firefox (and flock) on all my machines with about the same set of extensions. I like Gmail Notifier, EditCSS, IETab, and SessionSaver.

IETab is a lot more helpful that I first thought it would be. I use it when a site isn’t resolving well in firefox or a web app isn’t accepting data from me very well. All the extension is, is a small icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen that when clicked will reload you current tab as if it were an IE browser tab (ha).

I have come to enjoy SessionSaver the more I use it. It basically functions by caching all your open tabs (just the urls, not the actual pages) and will reload your current tab configuration if your browser crashes or you quit with the tabs open. This is a very handy feature but until recently I thought it was all the extension was capable of.

In the Tools menu, there are two items that have until now escaped my notice: SessionSaver Menu and SnapBack Tab menus. The SessionSaver drop down menu allows a high level of control over the automatic functions of the extension, enabling you to import and export individual sessions as well as archiving favorite sessions. The SnapBack Tab menu is by far my favorite: it keeps track of recently closed tabs so if you accidently close a tab you can open it again quickly using that menu. When the tab snaps back, it retains all the history associated with the surfing in that tab.

There are also interesting expert settings in: Tools>Extensions click on SessionSaver>Options>Simple. There are some interesting features in here as well that allow for syncing sessions through an iDisk or FTP/DAV server. I’m going to give this a try.

The one extension I’m still searching for is a good bookmarking solution. There are many things wrong with current bookmarking schema and it’s been an ongoing project of mine to find a good solution.
